      Colours are used in film as a way of expressing emotions, tones and characterization of a film. Throughout Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind colours are very present and important in the expression of the movie. Throughout the film Clementine's hair is a huge symbol in the progression of her relationship with Joel. at the very beginning of their relationship Clementine has green hair. Green is a symbol for life and new things. Their relationship has yet to ripped, it's still green. Clementine and Joel at this stage in their relationship, have yet to grow a relationship. As they spend more time together Clementine dyes her hair red. The red at this stage is showing more passion. They are now past the green stage. They have the fiery exciting passion of first being in love. Everything is rich and bright and exciting. however as time goes on and they have more problems in their relationships the red in Clementine's red hair goes from being the exciting, passionate red of love, but evolves into a fiery angry red. Red symbolizes anger. This is the whole stage in the relationship when everything goes bad. They are constantly fighting and angry with each other. And her hair expresses that. When Clementine and Joel meet again on the train after having erased each other from their memories Clementine's hair is blue. Blue is a much calmer colour. It has no fiery passion of red. It's calm, showing the calamity of not remembering any previous time with each other. In this case it shows the new beginning. And the authority of love. It emphasizes that love is the authority figure, as blue is an authoritative colour. The colours of Clementine's hair shows the progression of their relationship and time together.
