eternal colours

Colours are used in film as a way of expressing emotions, tones and characterization of a film. Throughout Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind colours are very present and important in the expression of the movie. Throughout the film Clementine's hair is a huge symbol in the progression of her relationship with Joel. at the very beginning of their relationship Clementine has green hair. Green is a symbol for life and new things. Their relationship has yet to ripped, it's still green. Clementine and Joel at this stage in their relationship, have yet to grow a relationship. As they spend more time together Clementine dyes her hair red. The red at this stage is showing more passion. They are now past the green stage. They have the fiery exciting passion of first being in love. Everything is rich and bright and exciting. however as time goes on and they have more problems in their relationships the red in Clementine's red hair goes from being the exciting, passionate red of love, but evolves into a fiery angry red. Red symbolizes anger. This is the whole stage in the relationship when everything goes bad. They are constantly fighting and angry with each other. And her hair expresses that. When Clementine and Joel meet again on the train after having erased each other from their memories Clementine's hair is blue. Blue is a much calmer colour. It has no fiery passion of red. It's calm, showing the calamity of not remembering any previous time with each other. In this case it shows the new beginning. And the authority of love. It emphasizes that love is the authority figure, as blue is an authoritative colour. The colours of Clementine's hair shows the progression of their relationship and time together.

Colours are also extremely expressive of a character. In Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind it expresses the different characteristics of Joel and Clementine, showing who they are as people. Joel and Clementine contrast each other in personality's and therefore in their outfits and colouring in them. Joel is very muted and conserved in his personality and clothing. He is a mix of greys and blues. He doesn't stand out from a crowd and isn't outwardly expressed. He is very introverted in his personality type, and the grey and blues of his clothing show that. On the other hand, Clementine is very bright and expressive. she is spontaneous and stands out in a crowd. She is impulsive and expressive. her clothing and hair show that. She wears a bright orange sweatshirt, which is a bright, spontaneous colour with a lot of personality, like she is. He expresses her bright colourful personality through her bright, ever changing hair. Clementine is bright with her clothing and personality and Joel is more dull and muted.

power angles

The theme of power is prevalent in The usual suspects, through use of camera angles. The use of camera angles give the illusion of power in certain people. Throughout the interrogation process of Verbal in the police station, Verbal was shown as to be in a position of weakness and vulnerability with high angles, showing him lower than the viewer. Where as his interrogator was in a position of power through the use of low angles, putting his face above the viewer making him seem domineering and all powerful compared to Verbal. We find out at the end of the film that this is not the case and that verbal just seemed to be weak. This is a very important piece of the film and its set up. This set up of the illusion of power is the way Verbal in the end has the most power. in the first scene of the movie Keyzer sose, or as we later find out, Verbal, is in a complete position of power over Keaton. He is always shown in a high angle. His face is also never shown, which is important for the movie, but it gives him a sense of power through a mask. The use of this mask makes him seem unconquerable because there is no face to put to this horrible idea of "the devil himself".

Throughout different parts of the movie, The usual suspects, there are a lot of lines and things going on giving a sense of confusion and deception. This is prevalent in the very first scene and the scenes on the boat. The use of these lines gives a lot for the viewer to focus on, making the screen seem complicated and confusing. This is important to symbolize with the confusing and complicated plot. The confusing aspect of the screen is important to the confusing aspect of whom exactly Kyzer Sose is. The use of lines is prevalent through these scenes. In the end it's also what Verbal is supposedly hiding behind. Which is a symbol for him hiding behind confusion when telling the story, keeping him safe and giving him power by the end of the film

Gilbert Grape

Throughout the film, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Gilbert is trapped by family and life. He has to take care of his younger brother, Arnie, all the time as though he is Arnie's dad. He is trapped with all the duties of a full-time caretaker for his younger brother on-top of normal, everyday family duties. He is trapped in the job of taking care of his mother, he and his two sisters take care of their mother as though she is another child in the family. With their mother being unable to perform many household duties anymore, her children are stuck performing the duties of a parent. Gilbert is also trapped in an affair with a married woman. He put himself in that position out of boredom and need of an escape, but it became another thing he was trapped in when the woman became emotionally invested, even though he was not. All these life circumstances trap Gilbert into places that aren't exactly the best.

Overtime, being trapped will kill anyone. The themes of death and life are very prominent on the family. The first death in the family was of their dad. Their dad committed suicide before the film began, but his death starts off a chain of metaphorical deaths in the family. Of course the dad's death wasn't really when he physically died. As Gilbert says to Becky about his father's death "it was like he was dead long before he actually died". This is the kind of emotional death that the members of the family live with. Gilbert lives with this kind of death, a slow decay of being trapped by his life. Becky says to Gilbert "I knew a guy like that once" Referring to Gilbert and how he was just as dead as his father.  His mom also suffered through emotional death, she died when her husband died and she lost all emotional capability other than to sit and watch TV day after day, needing a constant escape from her reality. The concept of death is very prominent amongst this family, however at the end of the film they all learn to break free and live.

Who am I?

The feeling of being infinite is not a common one, its not felt everyday. Yet it is the feeling best felt. It is why we live each day and allow ourselves to feel. This is the feeling I live for. It is ultimately my only real goal. I want to feel free and completely open to the world. To completely surrender everything and just feel the wind against my face. To feel connected to people and have a moment that feels like it could last forever. I live for the moments in life when I swear I could be infinite.

This half-written book is me. My story. I am the author of my own story. The only piece of me people is the page I am open to. it is the only piece of me readily open to the world. and even though I am the author my past cannot be rewritten. All I can do is read my past and decide how to write my future. Because my future is still not written. I have pages and pages to fill with the story of my life.

I am the kind of person to surround myself with people. Know as many people as I can and call them my friends. But the truth is that in doing this I am very lonely. I am friends with so many people that I don't have time for any of them really, and I don't actually know anyone. Not really. At the stage in life I am in right now, I know everyone, but I don't actually know anyone. This leaves a circle of space I have around me with no one in there, no real friendships. the the pretence of them. So in truth I am lonely, not the kind of lonely of sitting alone in a corner, but the deep painful lonely of pretending not to be.
